The Korea SK Group United Amazon Network Services (AWS) is collaborating on a plan to build the largest artificial intelligence data centre in Korea at the Moopo Industrial Park in Uysan City. According to information sources, the project is expected to be launched later this month and a foundation-setting ceremony will be held in August.

According to the relevant staff of the SK Group, “the work has been moving forward, but the exact time and details have not yet been finalized”. The data centre will deploy 60,000 graph-processing units with a large capacity of 100 MW, which will serve as a pole for Korea ‘ s AI infrastructure, helping Korea to take advantage of the global AI competition.
The new data centre is located at the Moopo National Industrial Park, located approximately 305 kilometres south-east of Seoul, and covers approximately 36,000 square metres. The first phase of the project will provide about 40 MW of electricity, with an overall total capacity of 100 MW, with 60,000 GPUs, which will be the first dedicated data centre for personal workers in Korea. According to the Korea Herald, this will be Korea ‘ s largest declared AI data centre to date, with projected investments of hundreds of trillion won.

Korea has accelerated the deployment of AI infrastructure in recent years in response to the global AI boom. The Government plans to ensure the supply of 20,000 GPUs by 2027, and the SK Group ‘ s cooperation with AWS goes far beyond this goal, demonstrating the ambitions of private enterprises in the field of AI. AWS, as a leading global cloud service provider, will provide an efficient cloud architecture and AI training capacity for data centres with technical expertise.
The construction of the data centre would significantly enhance Korea ‘ s AI computing capacity and attract domestic and foreign enterprises to deploy AI applications. The participation of AWS will provide more accessible cloud-based AI services to Korean enterprises and lower the technology threshold. SK Telecommunications CEO Yoo Ying each other indicated that the data centre would support the global competitiveness of Korea in the field of generating AI.

The SK Group and AWS plan to advance the project in a phased manner, with the first phase expected to be operational in 2026 and possibly to be expanded to 1 gwa in the future. The completion of the data centre will drive the development of the Korean AI ecosystem, attract investment in global science and technology enterprises and accelerate innovation in local start-ups.
